SEPTEMBER ADVANCED PEER PARENT TRAINING

I am extremely excited for September's Advanced Peer Parent Training, which will be held September 20th @ 5:30 p.m. at the Provo DCFS office (150 E Center Street, 5th floor, Provo).  We will have drug expert, Darrell Bingham, train us on the following:

I -   Definition of a drug
II -  The most popular drugs of abuse
III - Types and uses of drug paraphernalia.
VI - Basic signs and symptoms of use

Here is Darrell's bio:

I graduated from the UVU Law Enforcement Academy in May of 2001, began working with Orem Department of Public Safety in September of the same year (the day before 9-11 to be exact), I was assigned to alcohol enforcement in 2003 and was tasked to enforce alcohol related law including DUI and underage consumption.  I also worked closely with Utah County Division of Substance Abuse Prevention to establish EASY (Eliminating Alcohol Sales to Youth) from a county to a state wide program.  I took a brake from law enforcement in 2007 when I worked for the State of Utah Juvenile Justice Services as a JJS Councilor developing treatments plans to address seriously delinquent behavior.  I leapt back into law enforcement in 2008 when I began working for Lindon City Police.  While at Lindon City I served as a Drug Recognition Expert and a POST Instructor for DUI and Drug Recognition topics.  I also developed YES (Youth Education Series) discussing protective and risk factors and  adolescent drug use.  I also worked as a task force chair with SMART Utah County where I co-sponsored two legislative bills addressing prescription drug abuse in Utah.  I currently work as the administrator for Court Supportive Services where I have taught GOPT, Criminal Thinking, and PRIME for Life education classes for more than 7 years.  Overall I have more than 11 years combined experience related to drug abuse, addiction, drug prevention, drug recognition.

I really hope to see you all there.  Please remember that it will be a potluck, so bring something to share.  Also, be here at 5:15, so that I can get everyone in the building and up the elevators as the building closes at 5:00 p.m.
One last reminder, all Peer Parents are required to take at least two Advanced Peer Parent trainings per year.  We only have two more this year!!

See you there!!

JULY PEER PARENT ADVANCED TRAINING

Please mark your calendars for the next Peer Parent Advanced Training.  It will be held on July 19, 2012 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

This training will be different, because we will not be meeting at the Provo DCFS office, but at the Food & Care Coalition in Provo.

Brent Crane, Executive Director will be speaking to us about the services this agency provides.  This training will be very informative and will allow each of you to know what types of services are out there for our clients.  I had the opportunity to attend a training on the services that Brent and the Food & Care Coalition provide and I was very impressed.

I hope that you will all plan on attending this training and please remember that each of you are to complete a minimum of 2 Advanced Peer Parent trainings per year; however, I recommend going to as many as possible!

Again, please plan on meeting on July 19th at 5:30 p.m. at the Food & Care Coalition in Provo and because we will not be meeting at DCFS, we will not do a potluck for this training.

MARCH 2012 ADVANCED TRAINING

Thank you for all who came to support this training. I was very impressed with our trainer, Vicki Proctor, who was from the Provo City Police Victim Advocates Program. She spoke on what the definition of Domestic Violence is, the cycle, the legal aspect, and the signs of domestic violence.

Here is the handout for the domestic violence training:

Signs to look for in a battering personality

We also, had a roundtable where everyone could submit questions and we could discuss what other peer parents do. I felt this was really helpful and hope to do several of these in the future.

MARCH ADVANCED TRAINING

Our next Peer Parent Advanced Training will be held March 15th at 5:30 p.m. in the Provo DCFS Office, 150 E Center Street, 5th Floor. Please plan on attending!

We will be lucky to have one of the Provo Police Department's Victim Advocates train on domestic violence.

Also, the last 30 minutes of the training we will have an open forum for peer parents to ask each other questions. If you could email some questions you have always wanted to ask another peer parent, that would be great. Such as: How do you come up with lesson plans? What tools do you use to help parents? Do you have a place I can refer my client to for resources?

Please remember to meet in the lobby at 5:15 p.m. and I will help everyone get into the building and up the elevator since the building is now locked at that time.

Hope to see you all there!!

JANUARY 2012 ADVANCED TRAINING

We had a very good turn out this training, which was held on January 19, 2012 at the Provo Office. I appreciate all those who came. Please remember you need to complete at least 2 Advanced Trainings per year!!

First off, we had our very own Elizabeth Drew train on preparing our lessons. She gave several tips on how we can prepare for each individual client we teach. It is important to remember that each client is different and this isn't a cookie cutter program; we need to work within the clients needs and abilities.

Second, we had LuJean Marshall, from Utah Valley University's Turning Point program come speak to us on the following:

-Conflict Resolution
-Rules for time-outs (self)
-Setting and Maintaining Boundaries
-Saying "NO"

Lujean was very informative and I learned a lot from her training. UVU Turning Point does offer classes and if you would like to take them on your own time, you may contact her @ 801-863-7581.

Here are her handouts:

DANCE through Conflict Resolution
Time Out Rules
Assertive Request Model
No Power vs. "No" Power
